

A failed primary cement job rarely fails at the pump. It fails on the planning table. In the mud-removal strategy, the slurry design and the centralisation that were settled weeks before the cementing unit ever rigged up.
In the Niger Delta, formation pressures, deviated trajectories and reactive shales all conspire against a clean primary cement job. When zonal isolation is lost, the operator pays twice. Once for the original job, and again for the remedial squeeze and the lost production time. Here are the five failure modes we plan against on every job.
Cement cannot bond to a wall lined with gelled mud and filter cake. The single biggest lever on isolation is displacement efficiency. Conditioning the mud, running an engineered spacer train, and moving the pipe. We treat mud removal as a designed step, not an afterthought.
An off-centre casing leaves a narrow side where mud channels survive the displacement. Centraliser type and spacing are modelled to standoff, not guessed. Particularly through deviated and build sections.
Thickening time, fluid loss and free water all have to match the actual temperature and pressure profile. A slurry that is perfect on paper but mis-matched to bottomhole conditions either sets early or never develops strength where it matters.
As cement transitions from fluid to set, it briefly loses hydrostatic control. In gas-bearing sections that window is where channels form. Right-angle-set and gas-tight slurry designs shorten the vulnerable period.
If the job is not evaluated, the first time anyone learns isolation failed is when the well is on production. A planned pressure test and logging programme catches problems while the rig is still on location and remediation is cheap.
Every one of these is a planning decision, not a field accident. Get them right before mobilisation and primary jobs hold.
